EARLY CHRISTIAN AND BYZANTINE
Early Christian, Byzantine
Sam Jones
1. Weekly Summary
What I learned: Something that I found particularly interesting was how much of Early Christianity was influenced by Roman Culture. The Cristian- Byzantine architects adapted architecture from Rome, and reinvented them into houses of worship! It demonstrates how architectural spaces can change and adapt when Religion or the basis of society changes.
Chiesa di Sant'lganio di Loyola: The church of St. Ignatius of Loyola at Campus Martius is a Latin Catholic church, of deaconry rank, located in Rome , Italy.
"Maximianus Throne" Figure 4.7
This beautiful piece of furniture displays ivory carvings and is an astounding example of Byzantine furniture. The panels on the throne suggest a depiction of the great Saint John the Baptist that may have came from Constantinople.
Modern Implications:
These images portray the very gold and intricate elements of the Byzantine culture and the charm of the cathedrals!!
One Step Further :
"Anthemius of Tralles"
"Anthemius of Tralles"- a mathematician and architect. He was a professor of geometry in Istanbul. Anthemius with Isodorius of Miletus, were responsible for building the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.
This beautiful Cathedral was dedicated to be a public urban place, as well as a church and palace , by Constanius the second.
Closing Reflection:
Overall, this chapter helped me acknowledge that architectural designs do not simply fade when a new period begins. Instead, new eras carry these past designs and develop new meanings and purposes. The transition from Roman to Early Christian and Byzantine architecture shows how religion and culture strongly encourage beautiful architectural pieces and influence how these buildings are designed! I particular enjoyed this chapter because my faith is very important to me, so I would agree that faith can be a means for designing something spectacular!!

On your guy's ends, the pictures seem to be mis-aligned and on my end they are all perfectly aligned so please excuse that; I will try to figure that out! Thanks !
ReplyDeleteSammie, I really enjoyed your paper! You did a great job explaining the connection between Roman, Early Christian, and Byzantine architecture. I also liked your modern examples and personal connection to the topic. Great job!
ReplyDeleteSam, I love your reflection! I like the way you describe the transformation of old styles into new and more faith-inspired spaces, it really is interesting. I also appreciate how you connected these changes to the broader impact of faith on society. Fantastic job!
ReplyDeleteHi Samantha, I also enjoyed reading your paper, It would of been nice to see a bit more of a connection to modern times, and see how we as a society have learned from our predecessors and see current applications that we can also learn from and adapt
ReplyDeleteLove the layout and use of the highlighter tool, was easy to learn from! Beautiful images and choice of architecture. Love it!
ReplyDeleteI love the choices you used for current applications! You can clearly see how this type of design influences work today. Great job!
ReplyDeleteSam,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your summary of these two periods. You need to include more substance to your Blog entry. Each Blog should take at least 2 hours to put together. I appreciated that you added one piece of furniture. I also enjoyed your current examples of interiors that shared characteristics of both periods.
Anthemius of Tralles was the perfect architect to look at in more detail.
45/50 points
